Research has shown sustainable implementation requires ongoing support. One and two day workshops are fine for sparking interest, providing an overview, and developing common language - but long term change requires more.
I therefore work with schools and/or school districts in multi-year, collaborative relationships.
I will go into schools, co-teach, demo teach, or be an observer / consultant!
I can facilitate workshops, planning days, PLC's, "design lab", and more!
In some districts, they have chosen to begin with a few schools, to create “hubs” in their district and develop expertise that can then be used to facilitate the scaling up of implementation. Other districts have brought in “school teams” – two classroom teachers, a resource teacher, and school based administrator from each school. Training is provided for them, which then allows the classroom teachers, with the support of the resource teacher and admin, to begin implementation. Other teachers in the school are able to “see it,” and then in subsequent years implementation can be scaled up.
Training begins with the two-day introductory workshop described on the following page. Facilitated planning days, in school residency, co-teaching and lesson study follow to support initial implementation. As capacity and self-efficacy develops, additional workshops are offered to “add layers” to teachers expertise.
A combination of in-person and online formats can be used.
"I just wanted to express how much I appreciated the opportunity to partake in Jen Katz's planning session with one of my colleagues, and as part of a divisional group. As the day unfolded it was great to see how the 'Universal Design for Learning' can come together with time to plan, to develop deeper dialogue and to foster collegial collaboration. Although we are just starting this journey of learning, it's nice to know we are part of a division that so clearly supports our educational growth."

"Dear Jennifer,
I feel badly that I was not able to publicly thank you in an appropriate way. Please know that we are very appreciative of your work with us. You are what I call a triple threat… you know the research, you are a researcher and you can also speak as a teacher. That has such credibility. I love the passion and conviction that you bring to your presentations. I was reading a quote by Bill Tierney recently. He said, ”The most successful scholars are not those who merely regurgitate research findings again and again, but those who take risks, and in doing so, achieve a break through that enables us to see the world from a different perspective.” That quote reminded me of you. I feel that your work is helping teachers (and perhaps other researchers) understand their work from a different perspective and if put into practice, will result in improved outcomes for all of our children. Thanks again for a marvelous day."
